Sa physionomie inquiétante et inoubliable en fait un psychopathe très crédible, talent qu'a su utiliser Hitchcock lorsque l'acteur, chassé par le nazisme, a émigré aux Etats-Unis. De "L'homme qui en savait trop" au "Faucon maltais", de John Huston, ou à "Casablanca", de Curtiz, Peter Lorre fut un formidable interprète du film noir.
