Robert ne quitte jamais leur manoir bordelais, où il écrit des romans à succès, tandis que Claire voyage aux quatre coins de la planète avec des amants d'occasion qui ne la détournent jamais vraiment de son mari, qu'elle aime sincèrement. Un jour, de retour d'un périple sentimental, elle découvre que les domestiques ont changé et que son mari est à présent accompagné d'une troublante secrétaire, aussi discrète qu'omniprésente, Cécile.
