Mexique, 1900, pendant le règne du dictateur Porfirio Diaz. Un prêtre, Nazarin, protège les parias et subit l'opprobre de ses pairs et de ceux qu'il défend. A cause de sa grande charité, lui-même vit dans une indigence proche de la misère. Il se sacrifie et se dévoue tout en se sachant violenté, incompris, méprisé, insulté. Il forme un étrange trio avec ses deux suivantes, la pécheresse Béatriz et la prostituée Andara. Nazarin poursuit son chemin, empruntant le chemin de croix du Christ.
